Viva San Antonio
It's finally over! The last 10 days have been Fiesta here in San Antonio. Basically a huge city-wide party, complete with a day off of school for a parade. When we first moved here, it was the strangest thing for me to comprehend...an entire day off of school for a parade? Seriously?! Now, it's just how it is. My mom is still in denial of the fact that "it is what it is". There have been projects after projects for the boys. Such as, but not limited to, making a Fiesta King crown, decorating a shoebox for a float parade in school, decorating a bicycle for a bike parade and decorating a white hat with the most colors possible. I'm OVER it! I know it's been going on since the Civil War times, but could we possibly cut back to a weekend? I feel like our home will be TP'd tonight just because I typed that! It is what it is....bottom line, it's fun! Next up, Teacher Appreciation WEEK! Ah, presents per day for all 5 teachers in our lives. I personally like the idea and the fact that they give us a list of topics per day. This should be a breeze compared to last week!

25 years and I'm Still scared
I was watching the Today show this morning and they had a 25th anniversary to the Thriller dance on there. I was so frightened of that song much less the video when I was 10 years old. I would see on MTV, back when they would show videos, and I would close my eyes and plug my ears and find my way to the TV to change the channel. (back before there were remotes) The dancers still kinda freaked me out today. I know I will have a dream about it tonight. Shoot! And I was sitting right by the remote too. Should have changed the channel. I know somethings never change and I still tried to be a big girl and watch.
I'll have to wash it out with The Office and Grey's tonight!!.....Thriller who?! Michael Jackson didn't know thriller until the writer's strike and all new episodes of Grey's Anatomy!!! (clap, clap, clap)

Backyardigans
This weekend, we re-mulched our flowerbeds with pecan mulch. Mostly because I like the rich color that it has and it keeps those pesky stay cats from strutting their stuff in our yard. I'm not a kitty cat fan. I grew up in Kingwood, aka "The Livable Forest", so squirrels are nothing new to me, but I realized that the boys were in awe of the squirrel. Now that we have 2 truck loads of pecan mulch in our yard, squirrels have become a regular critter in the yard. I just went out to the back to water and there were 5 squirrels and about 10 white-wing doves getting their nut on. We have a backyard wildlife rescue going on it appears. Since the squirrels have become a regular site, I can not get that song out of my head..."I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut so move your butt on the dance floor." Who sang that, MC Hammer? I think it was something MDM and I would sing in our dorm room. I guess it's catching on around here because when I came in from watering, I found Ty singing "I'm just a squirrel" and dancing.
On a not-so-critter note, I was the photographer for our church's Mom/Daughter Tea. It was adorable!!! Some of the ladies of the church loaned out their china, which scared me to death, but it was beautiful! One of my favorites:
We have so many talented people in our church and we just happened to have a lady who is an expert at having tea parties. Who knew?! She and 2 of her friends did all the catering. Just look at some of this spread! Yummy!!!
I always volunteer to be involved in froufrou stuff! I love it and can't very well do it for any of my boys' birthday parties. That would be awkward, as Tanner would say.

The Bike Ride
Let me first start off with a picture of what we gave my mom for Christmas.
She always says "Don't get me anything. I don't need a thing! Save your money." blah, blah, blah....so when she tells me things like that, I just get random on her. We bought her this sweet ride, along with a silver helmet. Today was just beautiful outside, so we decided to take the bike on her maiden voyage. Notice she didn't wear her helmet! She looked around and said "No one else is wearing theirs. I WILL NOT be the only doofus wearing their helmet." She's crazy! The boys were wearing their helmets, she just didn't want to. It was like having 4 kids! She took off and went a little squirrely, which scared me to death. I asked her when the last time she rode a bike was and she said, "Oh about 30, 40 years. No big deal." And away she went. That was the most nerve-wracking bike ride ever. She did good though. We live on too many hills, so it didn't last too long for the first time out. While we were riding, Tanner said, "I lost my tooth!" Sure enough, he did loose his first tooth! Blood all in his mouth and a big grin saying, "It didn't hurt!" Then Mason is gagging because it was gross watching him talk with a mouth of blood. Ah, life with boys... when we got home, I said "smile" for a picture and this is what he came up with.
Let's try it again.
He's a big kid now~

Dallas Supercross
We went to the Supercross this weekend in Dallas. The boys LOVED it! Here are some pictures to explain why.
We got to take pictures and autographs with Davi Millsaps! He's a celebrity to us. We were in dirtbike heaven. Then, we got to Ivan Tedesco....the picture says it all. Could I have a bigger smile?!
YUMMY!!!! Billy knows of my love of Ivan and has approved of this photo to be framed and in our bathroom. Here is Ty and Chad Reed's bike, #22 and then a picture of Chad by his RV. He was a little too busy to sign any more autographs. He's a hot shot. He won, of course.
While in Dallas, we were in a restaurant before the races. I was in the bathroom and while washing my hands, another lady who was washing her hands stopped and said to me, "I usually don't dress like this." which completely took me off guard so I said, "Oh, OK. I think you look great!" Just a bit awkward. Then she proceeded to tell me she just got through with a 20 mile bike ride. Can you tell I'm still a little taken aback from this encounter? I didn't know what to say or why....still don't! The only down side of this entire weekend was the drive on 1-35 when my car's transmission went out! We were only in Hillsboro (still a 4 hour drive from our home) and drove the car at 40 miles an hour (that's all it would go) to Waco and left the Suburban at the airport there so we could rent a car. They only had compact cars!! So all 5 of us and some of our luggage got into the tiny-weeny Kia and drove the rest of the 3 hours. Thanks to Allen Samuels in Waco, the Suburban has a new transmission and she is on her way back home to us. Ah, such an adventure!

My Prayerful 11 year old
Tonight, Ty begged to say the prayer before dinner. I always LOVE when the boys say their prayers. So honest. I always tell the boys to talk to God like they would talk to their best friend, because He is and He wants them to talk to Him that way.
So Ty says, "Hey God. Thank you so much for money to buy this house, this meal and everything we have. Please be with me to do good in school because I sorta don't like it, sorry! (he did a cute little face while having his eyes closed. I peeked!) Please be with Dad so he won't be so tired and do good at work. Hang on, "Mom? Are you OK?" I said, "yeah, I'm good thanks." He begins again, "OK, sorry God...Mom says she good so be with my bros and in Jesus' name, Amen."
I have to think God got a kick out of that. As the mom of this child He's loaning me, I surely did.

Cooking Class
This summer, I am going to teach a cooking class at church. This is the first year that I have done this, but I have always been involved with the classes with enrollment and cookbooks, etc but never acutally cooked with the kids. I am so excited to do this! Here is one of the recipes that I tried out for the staff, Raspberry Biscuits with Vanilla glaze. Yummy! We take 10 kids and do kitchen safety, recipes and teach them how to serve God through cooking. We share with the office staff, we eat some for ourselves, we take some home for our families and at the end of the week, we have a luncheon for the staff and the kids serve them. It's such a great camp and I am so excited to do it! My only problem, I tend to sing, dance and be goofy in the kitchen. Do that with 10 elementary kids and they could get crazy with me. We'll tone it down....I hope! Here's to cooking~

Easter Photoblog
Our Easter was so much fun! Full of cascarones......
Poor Billy thought we were taking a cute couple picture and SURPRISE! I slammed one right on his precious little head.
Then there were the boys and their cascarones.... Tanner getting his 15 year old cousin, Cameron.
His retaliation!
Of course our boys are always up for a game of cascarones.
I love to see my nieces. I can't believe one has graduated from UT and the other one is graduating this May! They were just little peeps when I met them 14 years ago. They are so cool. They think of me as their big sister instead of their Aunt. I'll take it!
The boys changed into their skate clothes because Cameron was there. Skate or die dude!
Oh, and the hiding and finding of over 100 eggs!
Hope you all had a wonderful day too!

Nana is a gameboy!
My mom plays heart games and not usually with boys. I realize that title sounds a bit like a Beyonce song waiting to happen, but quite the contrary. She's not dating, so no games with any "boys" or elderly men for that matter. Her heart goes into atrial fibrillation from time to time and she has to wear a portable heart monitor to measure her ups and downs, mostly ups. Anyway, Tanner just picks up the phone and calls his Nana all the time. Yesterday, he called her and I walked in on this: "I just want to come over so I can be the only child for a while." She always approves, no matter what the excuse of the day is for him to get some "Nana time". She literally lives right around the corner, so it's no big deal to take him there and they both enjoy their time together. She had just come home with her monitor on and she called me to say that Tanner was asking tons of questions why she had wires hanging off of her. She wanted me to know what she had told him in case I needed to add to her descriptions to our smarty pants 5 year old. That night, after he came home to be a sibling again, he told me that Nana had a heart monitor on that is kinda like a Gameboy. I acted surprised so I could hear his version of what she told him. Because he is my baby, I like to get real close to him, on his level and usually close enough to give a quick kiss on the cheek every now and then while he is talking. He said, "She sometimes has to wear a heart watcher to see if her heart does crazy beats for a reason or if she is just crazy. But it doesn't hurt and there is a memory stick in it so the doctor can put it in his computer to see what's crazy in her heart." How could I not give kisses for that? Then he said, "Now could you please get out of my grill?" Talk about "game boy". He's playing with my heart now!
I called her to give her his interpretation of the heart monitor. She was laughing so hard, I think her readings will be off! She politely told me that she never used the word "crazy" and she would have been offended if it weren't true! They are two peas in a pod for sure. You never know what will come out of the mouths around here.

Communion Meditation
Sunday was hectic with an extra 5th grade boy who spent the night and time change. That meant that we had to leave for church at 7:15 am. But we did it! Everyone was fed, clean and tucked in. My Tanner bear does NOT enjoy going to Children's church, so I have no problem with him sitting with his "sweet, sweet Papa" during church. Actually, I love it. Our whole family sits together with my mom and I love Sunday mornings. This particular Sunday, Tanner was drawing on the back of our attendance card during communion. He tapped me on the arm and showed me this.
His sweet voice whispered in my ear, "It's Jesus on the cross." As tears filled my eyes, he looked at me and said, "Why are you crying? He did it for us Papa." I seriously thought I was going to have to leave the auditorium because that "boo hoo slobbering ugly cry" was rapidly approaching. Then, out of the silence of communion and the subtle sniffing on my part, I hear another little one in service bust out with "We are the Champions. We are the Champions, of the werld!" I know I shouldn't laugh during communion, but that was funny. Sweet little Nathan's momma didn't think so. I love kids!

Every Girl's Crazy 'Bout A Sharp Dressed Man
This kid cracks me up. Look at his pose! I asked him why he completely turned his foot sideways and he responded with, "To see my sweet new shoes." It was picture day with Chasity at school. This was the last preschool photo, so he got a "sweet" new outfit. But let me tell you, this kid is 5 going on 25. He spiked his own hair and came out of that bathroom and said "Smell!" as he blew a gail-forced wind into my face at point blank. Granted, he did smell minty fresh, but he also smelt a bit like Billy. I asked him what all he put on. "Well, I put on some of dad's cologne and also some of Ty's deodorant." I was going to ask him to define "some" but with the overwhelming amounts of different aromas, I didn't go there.
Ty is in 5th grade and the school did "THE PUBERTY TALK" last week. They emphasized the importance of daily hygiene and the imperative use of deodorant. So we rushed out to purchase some D.O. I really don't want to do this whole puberty thing. You know how you can leave a baby without question at a fire station, Baby Moses Law? Do they take 11 year olds? He's a good kid, but I don't want to deal with all the boy issues. Billy knows my fears and he has taken full responsibility to handle any boy issues that I may not feel comfortable with. Which is basically all of them! I'll take the dating thing, but that's all.
This is why Tanner is learning so much about D.O. for the B.O. at the tender age of 5. He's sure a sweet smellin' boy. I told Ms. Carmen when I dropped him off, "Watch out for Tanner today. He's either going to get chased by all the girls because he smells so good or he'll get chased by all the bees!" She said, "Doesn't matter. They both will leave a sting." Nice one Ms. Carmen, nice!
I adore that girl! If she would do a Pre-K 3, I'd be on it like white on rice.(ACU throw back for all my Wildcat friends!)

Motocross Mania
Last weekend, Billy and I had a "romantic getaway" so to speak. Let's just say, it was the best of both of our worlds all rolled up in one. We started our belated Valentine's weekend with another couple to Houston. Which is always fun for me. I just love to travel in the backseat with another girl who was equally as carsick as I was. So many pit stops were required. Finally we made it!
We had great seats for the AMA Motocross. The boys were so MAD! But sometimes, that's just what the Momma and the Dada get to do, whatever they want with or without the children! Since Billy got to pick the "main event", I got to choose the hotel. Say hello to Hotel Derek. It was so nice. I felt a little bit, oh I don't know, motorcycle chickish during the day and then Derek made me feel "oh so prissy" when we got back to hotel. While we were in Houston with Billy's best friend, Paul, I made a date with my best friend, Terri! She and her husband just had little Lucus, their first, about 4 months ago, so we ate brunch with them on Sunday. That might have been the highlight of my weekend....but right under the AMA superstars of course. Here are some of the highlights.
There was fire,
Our seats were so good, that one of the main event racers, Josh Hill was sitting right behind us for the intro. This kid is 18~ his poor mother!
And of course lots of motorcycles.
Then was Sunday and my Terri and her sweet new family!
We came home with tons of souvenirs for the boys like t-shirts, posters but no autographs. We actually had pit passes, but with all of our pit stops, we missed the riders while they were doing autographs. I was tempted to scribble something down on a poster, but that would have been so mean and awful! The fact that we stood in line for the shirts for 45 minutes made up for it in our minds. We did bring home this one last souvenir from Derek, as I was calling the hotel by the end of the weekend, this:
We were hoping it would work as well at home as it did at Derek, but not so much! It's nice to be home again~
We already have tickets to take the boys when the AMA races come to Dallas in April. So they will get to see it all too. I love to experience things like this through their eyes. Except the hotel will be more like La Quinta and cuisine from Denny's. Can't wait!

Happy Heart Day!
This morning while driving the boys to school, there was such a beautiful pink tint to the clouds. One of the clouds was shaped in the perfect shape of half of a heart. I told the boys that God was having some fun since it was Valentine's Day. They all agreed. Tanner said, "Why did he draw half of a heart?" Just when I was going to answer with something like, "He's just not done yet.", Mason said the best answer anyone could ever give. He said, "Because we make up the other half of his heart." Somehow I managed to make it to school through the tears that were accumulating in my eyes at 7:20 am. There are so many times when our kids teach us the most valuable lessons ever learned. I wish I had a zoom lens with me, but that image will forever be in my mind along with the explanation. It just goes to show that God is amazing and always shows us how much he loves us. "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matt. 18:3
If you have a Papa Johns Pizza around you, they are making pizzas in the shape of a heart for today. That's what we're eating. Boys are so easy to please!
I hope you all have a wonderful Heart Day!

Westward Ho!
Mason had his 2nd grade PTA performance called Westward Ho! It's rodeo month here in San Antonio, so the western theme is everywhere! Today, Tanner had "cowboy breakfast" at his school complete with full on western wear and the breakfast of a cowboy.
Mason had a speaking part in the program. I'm not talking "welcome to the show" but rather this monologue: When I first came to this Land, tells of the difficult situations a new settler might encounter, trying to establish their new home. The folk song has many different verses, with various outcomes. Folk songs, were just that, handed from folk to folk, and rarely written down. These are America's most enjoyable and humerous songs. Luckily, he was able to read it instead of memorizing it all.
It was on a platform with a microphone in front of all of the parents and students. I was so nervous for him! But he was WONDERFUL!! I would have had THAT voice. You know the one...shaky, sluggish, a sort of drunken sound. But not Mason. He was confident and said everything with emphasis. Not just the monotone, "reading lines" voice. Billy and I really want to meet his parents because we are not public speakers at all. After his speaking part, they sang folk songs like "Oh My Darlin' Clementine".

Mardi Gras!
Laissez Les Bon Temps Roule!!
In honor of all my cajun side of the family, I kept the Brandons alive by making beignets from Cafe' Du Monde but kept the coffee Folgers. The boys should be hitting a major downer from all the powdered sugar during Math for Ty and Science for Mason. Tanner is in preschool so probably during Chapel. Sorry teachers, but Mardi Gras is fun for me!
As an early celebration, Saturday night, I made gumbo with my roux from scratch. My dad would be so proud, yet my uncle thinks I'm crazy for not buying it at HEB. Not the same Uncle Tommy, not the same I argue.
Eating is about as far as I'll take the day. Not planning on throwing beads or flashing anyone, but if nothing else, I might remember that tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. So please don't tell anyone that there is something on their forehead tomorrow. EVERY year I fall into that trap! Just a friendly reminder for anyone else who continually puts their foot in her mouth like me. Ayez un jour grand!

Love Notes from My Boys
If there's one thing I can NOT stand, it's seeing an empty box in the pantry, a jug of milk with only a enough for a bird to sip and still taking up space in the refrigerator, or an empty roll of TP! I don't ask too much, but these are my pet peeves, just tell me we're out before I find out when I am in need! These are pet peeves that could cause me to go from sweet Mama to mean babysitter with a low hourly rate, in about a second. So I had a "come to Jesus" meeting with all boys in this house, big and small. This even meant the Daddy. I showed them the adorable pen and paper my sweet friend gave me on my birthday, the one that I threatend their lives with if I ever saw them making paper airplanes with or dusting something with. I love this thing! Isn't it cute?!
Anyway, it is now the official,"We Need More" pad and pen. So it's all the rage around our house. They asked if they could put requests or wishes on there or did it have to be just things we are out of? I told them requests would be accepted, but shouldn't be expected. Those would be special treats for special behaviors, or any extra money in my budget. Here are some of the requests/needs. And believe me, I can tell them apart!
There is no "spell check" on this adorable pad and pen set, but a Mom can always read between the lines. When I was looking for the "backed patato's" I remembered that I wanted a new heating pad for my back! So it's all good. I got it when I went for the Bandaids, which are always on the list! We go through those about a box a week, a slow week that is!
Mason wrote most of them and spelt out some for Tanner to write. He told me that ice cream was a wish, but the Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce was a need. If it will get him to eat a vegetable, then come home Sweet Baby Ray...we've been missin' ya son. After I took this pic, Tanner wrote on it the next day, I (heart) U. So of course his requests will be in the shopping buggy next HEB trip!

Good Bye City Life!
We spent the weekend in Cestohowa. Billy's cousin got married and if you've never been to a Catholic, Polish wedding, then you are missing out! These things go on for an entire day. It's so much fun, especially if you are into drinking ALOT. But I'm here to say, it's still fun if you do not drink. But dancing is a MUST. As soon as the bridal party arrives, the bridesmaids come around with bottles of hard alcohol and sell shots for $1. The money is collected for the honeymoon. They didn't do so well at our table. But did very well throughout the rest of the hall. Then the older Polish people go around banging a pot and singing a wedding blessing song, I would attempt to spell it, but I have no idea where to start. My in-laws were the lead singers for the song, Grandpa is a wonderful singer. Anyway, while the song is being sung, people throw money in the pot for the couple's new life. Although our wedding day was a simple Church of Christ ceremony, complete with finger foods, unspiked punch, coffee and wedding cake, we did have a throw down after our honeymoon. It was complete with the old traditions minus the bridesmaids selling shots. I didn't think my girls were too keen on that idea. They did; however, collect enough money for a washer and dryer during our Polish song!
My favorite highlights of the weekend were the Grand March, the Cotton-Eyed Joe, and all the waltzes with my hubby. We spent the night at our farm in Kosciusco and rode dirt bikes on Sunday. I don't usually like to go to the farm, but we were right there, and I missed these little babies.
I used to get sad when the plan was to feed them and then load a couple up and sell them. Now, it's old hat. When we drove up, we just missed a baby calf being born. That was a such a treat to see it try to walk for the first time. I'm sad the boys missed seeing it being born....I think?!?!
This one was the pick of the day.
We also had time to ride a little. Don't ask me what I was thinking striking a pose with all my gear on. Pink gear! I have to remember that I'm a girl with all these boys around me all the time.
I'm such a dork!
Although I enjoy getting away and going to the farm, I still call "1st SHOWER!" on the ride home. I'm a city girl at heart.

Fiber One Won
This morning, like most, was a blur. I have such bad allergies with Mountain Cedar that my debilitating sneeze attacks make me more groggy than usual for our morning rush. Billy goes to work at 4:45am, so I HAVE to get up and get going and drive the boys to school. To add to this chaos, Tanner got up early too! He usually sleeps until we are ready to leave, then I get him up. Well, in the midst of getting 3 breakfasts ready, 3 lunches packed and trying to sip some go-go juice into me, Ty said, "Can I have another muffin please?" This boy can eat in the morning! I looked and saw that all I had given him was gone and I saw two extra muffin wrappers on the counter in front of him. "Did you have 3 of those?" He said, "Yes, mam. They are delicious!" Uh oh! I made these: Yogurt-Bran Muffins These are so good! But the Fiber One cereal in them is a hum-dinger. I hesitated to tell him as to not plant any ideas, but I felt it necessary to let him know the effects of consuming that much fiber at one sitting and weighing in at a whopping 72 lbs. The end result could be devastating to say the least!
I had a doctor's appointment that I had already confirmed and have been waiting to go to for over a month. I had just sat down in the waiting room and opened my book when, there goes the cell phone. Sure enough, the clinic was calling with Ty in the office for the 2nd time complaining of a stomach ache. I tried not to laugh into the phone. Not because I thought it was funny, but it kinda was funny in a predictable way. I really did feel sorry for him, but there was NO way, if at all possible, I was leaving my doctor's appointment that took 40 minutes to get to. So I told the nurse that I was in fact at a very important doctor's appointment in the Medical center and I would have to get my emergency contact to come get him. So, once again, Nana to the rescue! I love having my mom right around the corner for times like these. I felt like a horrible mom, but I was already in my doctor's office and I knew exactly what was wrong with Ty, so I made a selfish, not-so-good-mommy decision. He was fine with it, but I felt bad. I rushed home after my appointment and all was well. It wasn't, but it got better. Poor guy! Maybe he'll ask for permission when he eats anymore muffins around here.
